A SIMPLE GUIDE TO THE INFLAMMATION CYCLE
Inflammation is a repair cycle. The problem is when it cannot finish.
When tissue is damaged or irritated, the body changes how that area works. It opens blood vessels, brings in immune cells, clears damaged material, rebuilds structure, and then should turn the response down.
This page walks through that sequence in plain language. The complete illustrated book is available as a free PDF.
THE CENTRAL IDEA
The body opens a temporary worksite so it can protect and repair tissue.
Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, and fatigue can be parts of this repair response. They show that the body has shifted resources toward protection and cleanup. A healthy cycle does not remain open forever. It completes the work and returns the tissue toward normal function.
THE FIVE-STAGE REPAIR CYCLE
Repair should move forward, not circle in place.
Each stage prepares the tissue for the next. If the trigger continues or the body cannot complete one of these jobs, the response can remain active.
- 01
Alarm
The body detects damage, irritation, infection, or metabolic stress and calls for help.
- 02
Protect
Blood flow changes and fluid, immune cells, oxygen, and repair proteins enter the area.
- 03
Clear
Immune cells remove damaged material while lymph carries excess fluid away.
- 04
Rebuild
Protein, structural fats, vitamins, minerals, and cellular energy restore the tissue.
- 05
Resolve
The alarm quiets, swelling falls, blood flow normalizes, and the tissue returns to work.
THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE
Acute inflammation finishes. Chronic inflammation keeps receiving reasons to stay active.
A response with a finish line
The trigger is limited. Cleanup catches up. Rebuilding has enough material and energy. The alarm quiets and the tissue returns toward ordinary work.
A worksite that keeps reopening
The trigger remains, new pressure keeps arriving, cleanup falls behind, or rebuilding is undersupplied. The body continues behaving as if the job is unfinished.
WHY THE CYCLE GETS STUCK
Load keeps coming in faster than repair can be completed.
Chronic inflammation is easier to understand when the incoming burden is separated from the body's capacity to handle that burden.
What adds to the load
- The original trigger remains or keeps returning
- Sugar, constant eating, damaged fats, smoke, alcohol, poor sleep, or other daily pressures keep adding work
- Digestion or elimination leaves more material for the body to manage
What supports capacity
- Protein and structural fats supply new tissue and membranes
- Vitamins, minerals, oxygen, and sleep support the repair work
- Digestion, liver handling, bile, lymph, kidneys, and stool move material through and out
THE ENR RESOLUTION FRAMEWORK
Five jobs help the body move from an open worksite toward completed repair.
- 01
Lower the repeated load
Reduce the inputs that keep telling the body that the original problem is still present.
- 02
Digest what enters
Food must be broken down before its protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals can be used.
- 03
Clear what is finished
Fluid, debris, bile-bound material, and stool must keep moving toward an exit.
- 04
Supply rebuilding
Tissue repair requires usable protein, membrane fats, micronutrients, oxygen, and energy.
- 05
Allow the response to end
A quieter chemical environment gives the body room to stop defending and finish restoring function.
This framework is educational. Persistent or severe symptoms still require appropriate medical evaluation.
